Chapter 28

Zoe

LESS THAN THIRTY MINUTES LATER, Zoe and the other Tails who aided in the ambush of the fishing boat arrived at an underwater grotto off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, near Smuggler’s Cove. The cave was somber as most of the mixed-tails grieved over losing their friends. Ewalt held Kasumi’s hand as she lay curled up on a large rock, drained from the amount of magic she expelled to save them.

Zoe leaned against a rocky mound near Murdock, who stayed near the entrance, always on alert.

“You held your own today, Zoe. I am eager to see how powerful you will become once you gain, and know how to wield, the magic available to royalty,” Murdock said.

Zoe appreciated the compliment even though she wished she could have done more. “Thanks.”

Murdock straightened when he caught sight of something in the distance. “Here she comes.”

Aislinn’s bright pink tail illuminated the grotto like a neon light, demanding attention from all. “Atlantic-Tails, I assume. Give me an estimate on how many there were,” she said to Murdock.

“The normal three. Plus, William. And perhaps another twenty to thirty pure and mixed-tails.” Murdock avoided Aislinn’s intense gaze.

“No need for your accusations, Murdock. I was near Central Mexico and couldn’t get here in time to help.”

Murdock anchored his eyes with hers. “Stay out of my thoughts.”

Zoe dove across the water, placing herself between them. She held a hand at Murdock’s chest, stopping him from advancing on Aislinn. “This situation has us all stressed, but we can’t be fighting with each other. There are bigger issues that need our energy. Worry about personal squabbles later.”

Murdock instantly backed away, lowering his chin. “My apologies, my queen.”

Ewalt swam up to them. “We need to form a plan, Aislinn,” he looked from a sleeping Kasumi to Murdock, “and allow all of us to rest and gather our thoughts.”

“I can agree with that," Aislinn said. "The safest place will be Hawaii. It’s the location hardest for Atlantic-Tails to reach and the closest to the other realms if we should need any assistance from them."

Murdock cocked his head at Aislinn. “Hawaii? I thought you didn’t enjoy being near there because it’s too close to the other realms.”

Aislinn gave him a hard smile. “You’re right, I don’t enjoy being that close, but I’m more concerned about safety.”

Zoe made a mental note to ask why Aislinn didn’t enjoy being near another realm. She wondered if those Tails weren’t as friendly as the ones in her realm. She sighed. There was so much she needed to get caught up on.

Ewalt fluttered his fluke. “Very well. I will escort Kasumi and the others then return here once they feel safely settled. I’m sure some, including Kasumi, will want to retreat to land and hide among the tourists.”

“And I’ll gather our strongest Tails from across our realm and meet you back here,” Murdock said to Ewalt.

Zoe blew out a line of bubbles. She felt horrible for leading Lucas and his goons into the water and putting her kingdom at more of a risk than it already was.
